Letters: Tolerance is the answer
Published in Daily News Egypt on 09 - 12 - 2008

With reference to an article published by Daily News Egypt on Dec. 5 titled "Honey, I'm homosexual , I'd first like to thank you for picking up such a hot subject and for highlighting the plight of the women - and men - concerned.
But please note that homosexual or bisexual people are not deviant or sick and neither could or should they be cured . Alfred C. Kinsey s exemplary research into human sexuality showed that about one third of any population can be considered bisexual (meaning you can have physical and emotional ties to both sexes) and approximately 7 -10 percent can be called homosexual, which means that not only your physical preferences but also your emotional setup is geared towards people of the same sex.
You don t get infected or influenced . Those concerned often are pretty sure about their own identity even before puberty. Also there are people who feel they are born in the wrong body (transgender) and then some who are born without clear sexual identity.
All this is not restricted to the human race. Homosexuality can be found among animals as well, so it cannot be considered unnatural . More tolerance would spare a lot of people those terrible marriages of convenience.
One cannot possibly imagine the abyss of loneliness those women mentioned are plunged into, the feeling of worthlessness, of having years or decades of one s lifetime wiped away, stolen. It is really absurd and a lot to ask of these women to adapt to such a situation, usually to the cost of their own emotional and sexual fulfillment, just to go on serving as a camouflage.
And what woman would want a man who needed the described implants to overcome his revulsion against intercourse with his wife? I can just ask the men and women concerned to think twice and spare their potential spouses or children this excruciating experience.
