El-Saeid holds premiership of Tagammu party as members fear a swing to the right

CAIRO: Rifaat El-Saeid gained another victory in the Tagammu party elections held Wednesday.
In the packed and smoky Tagammu party headquarters in downtown Cairo, party members gathered in their hundreds for the sixth annual conference to track the party's progress.
El-Saeid won the party presidency with 422 votes; his only competition being from Abu Ezz Al-Hariri, who gained 169 votes.
However, El-Hariri's supporters certainly made their presence felt, calling out slogans and cheering on their chosen candidate.
The elections for the central committee will take place today as part of the two-day party conference.
They come at a time when many party members fear that the Tagammu party, which prides itself on its staunch socialist values, is slipping towards the right. The trend is the result of right wing forces within the party.
"We must return to the origin: I don't want to die a capitalist, I want to die a socialist, cried out Badry Fargali, prominent party member and former politician in the People's Assembly.
Standing against continuous calls of "Sit down Badry from El-Saeid , the veteran politician accused the party of defending capitalist policies, claiming he "would die under the banner of socialism.
