JAKARTA: A Malaysian student has been arrested in Indonesia carrying 6.8 grams of marijuana, police confirmed to Bikyamasr.com on Tuesday afternoon after reports began coming out. According to police, the student is a member of the medical faculty at a Yogyakarta university. The 22-year-old student was detained by a Narcotics division team at Jalan Kaliurang, Daerah Sleman, Yogyakarta, after he had bought the drugs for Rp300,000 (about RM100), after he allegedly ordered the drugs online. Police, who had earlier been informed of such activities at Jalan Kaliurang, Sleman, waited for the student who had hidden the drugs in a newspaper before detaining him for questioning. Education Malaysia director in Indonesia Juzhar Jusoh said the student was a JPA scholarship holder. Juzhar said the family of the student had been informed and the mother of the student had arrived in Yogyakarta. He also urged leaders of Malaysia students in Indonesia to monitor the activities of students in their respective universities to ensure they did not indulge in such activities. Indonesia carries a mandatory death sentence for drug offenses, although marijuana charges in recent years have not seen the death penalty carried out. There is hope that the student will be deported from the country instead of facing trial.
