KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Sabah state Chief Minister Musa Aman has called on Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to give priority on education and research in biofuel production, particularly in second generation biofuels, industrial biotechnology and bio-refineries. He said comprehensive research, development and deployment strategies were necessary in developing a new generation of biofuels which had better yields, commercial viability and greater environmental performance. “Properly managed biofuels have the potential to offer important benefits, including strengthening energy security by diversifying energy sources. “Biofuels provide important opportunities for industrial development, innovation and high quality jobs which are important factors as we move towards a knowledge-based economy,” he said when opening the First International Workshop on Advances in Biofuels on Wednesday. The text of his speech was read by Deputy Chief Minister Yee Moh Chai. According to Musa, for the biofuel sector to move forward, efforts were needed at international and local levels to ensure sustainable production and consumption.
