NAIROBI: Zambia fears that measles could become a major issue, potentially an outbreak among children, if action is not taken to curtail the disease. Minister of Community Development Joseph Katema said that the country has reported 238 children dying from measles over the past two years. “The government is seeking to reduce the mortality rate through enhanced immunization programs,” Katema said at the launch of the National Measles Campaign in Chawama Township in Lusaka Monday. The head of Britain's Department for International Development (DFID) in Zambia, Kelvin Quinlan, said the British government had given Zambia 3.1 million Pounds for the country's measles immunization program. Quinlan added that 4.4 million children were being targeted for measles and polio vaccination in Zambia.
