DUBAI: The Iranian government said at the opening of the Non-Aligned Movement summit that opened on Thursday that it has no desire to seek nuclear weapons. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei reiterated his country's push for peaceful nuclear energy. The nuclear program currently underway in Iran has left much of the world, especially Israel and the United States on edge, with Israel saying it would attack Iran if it continues its project. Khamenei said that “The Islamic republic is not after nuclear weapons” and will never slacken off its right to “peaceful use of nuclear energy.” “Iran's slogan is “Nuclear energy for all, nuclear weapons for none”,” he told the summit. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged Khamenei at the summit late Wednesday to take concrete steps to prove Iran's nuclear work is peaceful. The West suspects Iran is seeking a nuclear weapons capability, an accusation Tehran denies. Ban on Thursday urged Iran to remove international concerns over its controversial nuclear program. “For the safety of the region and the world, Iran should take measures and build mutual trust to remove international concerns. This can be done through cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),” said Ban.
