CAIRO: Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi's office said on Sunday that detained Egyptian journalist Shaimaa Adel will be released. Adel has been under detention for nearly two weeks, which has seen Egyptians show solidarity with her and her family by holding daily protests at the Sudanese Embassy in Cairo demanding her release. President Morsi “has agreed during talks with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir in Addis Ababa on the release today of journalist Shaimaa Adel, who has been detained in Sudan,” presidency spokesman Yasser Ali said in a statement carried by Egypt's official MENA news agency. Prior to her arrest, she was covering the ongoing unrest in Sudan, dubbed “Sudan Revolt" by activists, which has seen thousands pour onto the streets calling for an end to Omar al-Bashir's rule. A number of journalists and activists have joined the protests outside the Sudanese embassy in downtown Cairo calling for her release. The Egyptian press syndicate called on Sudan to free the journalist while dozens of Egyptian and Arab rights organization are calling on the Sudanese government to respect international protocols that protect journalists in conflict zones.
