CAIRO: Head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi discussed on Wednesday with US Senator and Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee John Kerry (D-Mass.) ways of boosting joint cooperation between the two nations. They also discussed the latest regional and international developments. The meeting also took up the transitional period in Egypt, which is managed by SCAF. The Tantawi-Kerry meeting also underlined the need to boost the economy and promote investments in the upcoming phase. The meeting was attended by SCAF members along with the US ambassador to Egypt. In the same context, Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr stressed that all friends of Egypt must have the confidence of its ability to meet the requirements of the political process and passing the transitional period safely to the presidential elections and finalizing the new constitution. This, according to a statement released to Bikyamasr.com by Egypt's State Information Service. Foreign Ministry spokesman Amr Roushdi said that the Amr-Kerry meeting focused on the features of the transitional phase in Egypt as well as the latest developments in the region, especially the situation in Syria and the tension between the Sudan and South Sudan. Additionally, Parliament Speaker Saad el-Katatni met with Kerry and probed the coming Egyptian presidential elections. A statement by the parliament speaker office said that the two sides discussed the political conditions in Egypt and transition to democracy. Kerry stressed that Egypt is a state of regional influence.
