CAIRO: Egypt's Sami Annan, Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces, has denied media reports circulating about his intention to run for the presidency, pointing out that all that is said about his willingness to run for presidential elections are just rumors, which “have no basis in reality.” Some local newspapers have attributed statements to Annan, where he was said to declare his intention to run for the presidency, which was denied later by the military's chief of staff. Figures like Ayman Nour, Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, Amr Moussa, Ahmed Shafiq, Hazem Saleh Abu Ismail and Bothaina Kamel have intensified the competition of the presidential race. The Muslim Brotherhood announced on Sunday that Khairat el-Shater, the group's popular and wealthy businessman, would also be a candidate. The Egyptian presidential elections are scheduled for May and is the second multi-party elections in the history of Egypt after the 2005 elections, and the first presidential elections after the January 25 uprising, and its first round will be held on May 23-24.
