CAIRO: The attempts of Islamists in the parliament, represented by the Muslim Brotherhood`s political wing, the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), and the ultra-conservative Salafist Nour Party to form the Constituent Assembly to draft Egypt`s new Constitution based on the 50/50 option (50 per cent of the Assembly`s membership to be allocated for the MPs), raised controversy and outraged several political movements and political parties whom, declared their willingness to stage massive protests on Saturday, when the Shura Council and the People`s Assembly will convene in a joint session to elect the members of the Constituent Assembly. More than 18 revolutionary and political movements called for staging demonstrations and marches on Saturday in protests against the dominance and monopoly of the parliamentary majority over the election and formation of the Assembly. The scheduled demonstrations will be held in front of the well-known governmental conference hall that will witness the election of the members of the constituent assembly by the MPs. The call for massive protests will coincide with the discussions of the parliament and the voting process, at the time the marches will be organized by the Democratic Front of the April 6 Youth Movement, and the and the Egyptian Movement for Change, Kefaya, Youth for Justice and Freedom Movement, and the Free Front for Peaceful Change. Tariq Al-Kholi, the official spokesman for the April 6 Movement Democratic Front, explained that the movement has distributed fliers in all districts of Cairo and Giza to call for a demonstration on Saturday. The People's Committee for Constitution is formed by public figures, academics, independent parliamentarians, led by professor of constitutional law Tharwat Badawi and Counselors Tahani El Gebali, and Zakaria Abdul El Aziz, MP Gamal Zahran, the Secretary of the Union of Professional Associations Dr. Sherif Kassem and human rights activist Ahmad Seif, a lawyer and political activist, Issam Islambouli and filmmaker, Ali Badrakhan and writer, Salwa Bakr.
