New Delhi (dpa) – An Indian court Tuesday sentenced to death two men convicted of the rape and murder of a woman in the southern city of Pune in 2007, news reports said. According to evidence presented in the court, the 22-year-old woman was raped, strangled with a scarf, had her wrist slashed and her head smashed with a stone. Her body was later found in a field. Police said the driver was part of a regular taxi service used by the call center where the woman worked. He had picked up other employees on the way back to the office after the murder, NDTV news channel said. Due to the concrete evidence and examination of 29 witnesses, the court held the two accused guilty,” special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, was quoted as saying. Lawyer Atul Patil who was representing the victim called the ruling a landmark judgement that should act as a deterrent at a time of rising incidence of rape in the country. According to the National Crime Records Bureau data, there were 22,172 rape cases reported to police in 2010, compared to 2,487 in 1972.
