Saudi Arabia executed some 78 people in 2011, landing the kingdom as one of the leading countries to employ the death penalty globally. The kingdom uses archaic methods in its capital punishment, such as separating the head from the body with swords. Some punishment takes place publicly. Stoning is also a regular practice in Saudi Arabia and it is also done publicly. These methods continue to draw criticism around the world for their inhumane nature. Anti-capital punishment activists around the world continue to campaign against the kingdom and other countries with high numbers of executions such as Iran.
