Sydney (dpa) – A town in northern Australia was declared a disaster zone Tuesday after a tropical storm left 60 buildings damaged but no one seriously injured. Dozens of roofs were torn off, cars flipped over, power lines brought down and trees uprooted in an early morning storm described by Queensland Premier Anna Bligh as a “mini-tornado.” She called in soldiers from the nearby barracks to help with repairs. “These quiet suburban streets of Townsville have suffered a shocking and devastating event,” Bligh said after flying the 1,375 kilometers from Brisbane. “Its force was obviously ferocious.” Erin Matinca told national broadcaster ABC that “the whole house was shaking, the whole upstairs was just shaking, the sound was quite horrifying.” BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/auLPQ Tags: Australia, Tropical Storm, Weather Section: Oceana
