DUBAI: The death toll from a capsized ferry in a Bangladesh river has risen to at least 40 with scores still missing, officials said Wednesday. Navy divers retrieved nine more bodies from the vessel that capsized on the Meghna River with more than 250 passengers on board. According to one witness in the area, “it is really sad to watch as the limp bodies are pulled from the water.” The witness told Bikyamasr.com that “the workers and people are not stopping and still trying to find people alive.” The ferry collided with a cargo vessel and sank near Charjhapta, 60 kilometers south of Dhaka, Tuesday morning. Chief district administrator Azizul Islam said a salvage vessel had joined the rescue effort to lift the sunken boat. He said that many passengers were believed to be trapped inside. People had thronged the riverbank waiting for news of their missing relatives and friends, police officer Mohammad Sahabuddin Ahmed said.
