Manila (dpa) – A Philippine anti-graft court on Tuesday ordered the arrest of former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her husband for allegedly receiving millions of dollars in kickbacks from a Chinese firm for an aborted government contract. Arroyo is already under arrest in a military hospital on electoral sabotage charges, but her husband, lawyer Jose Miguel, was expected to post bail, according to a counsel for the couple. The charges stem from allegations that the Arroyos received kickbacks from Chinese firm ZTE Corp so it would be awarded a 329-million-dollar national broadband network contract in 2007. The contract was rescinded a few months after it was signed amid allegations that it was overpriced and other irregularities. Former elections chief Benjamin Abalos and former transportation secretary Leandro Mendoza were also charged with graft over the contract, and their arrests were ordered. Abalos is already detained on the same electoral sabotage charges filed against Arroyo. The Arroyos, Abalos and Leandro have all denied the allegations. If convicted, they face up to 10 years in prison. BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/JEpKI Tags: Arroyo, Corruption, Graft, Philippines Section: East Asia, Latest News
