SINGAPORE: A Vietnam man set his wife on fire after discovering his fighting cockerel had gone missing, police said on Tuesday. It is the latest violence toward women in the country, which rights groups say needs attention. “We must get to the bottom of why Vietnam is being hit with domestic violence in recent times,” said Phom Ten, a Hanoi-based women's domestic violence social worker. She told Bikyamasr.com that “we have see a surge in violence towards women and are working with the government to find solutions to this growing concern.” Dang Ngoc Kinh, 40, poured petrol over his wife on Sunday while she was lying down and set her alight because he blamed her for the disappearance of a 50-dollar fighting cockerel, the online newspaper VietnamNet reported, quoting Mai Van Chien, chairman of Hai Rieng Town in Yen Phu province where the incident took place. Kinh's 31-year-old wife suffered serious burns and was in critical condition. The couple's three children escaped the fire, Dan Tri newspaper reported. Cock fighting is legal in Vietnam if no gambling is involved, and is widespread throughout the country.
