CAIRO (dpa): Three bogus students who sat in for real candidates in international English-language exams in Hong Kong were jailed on Monday, a news report said. The three men, from mainland China, used the passports of the real candidates to sit the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) English proficiency exams in Hong Kong on Saturday, public broadcaster RTHK reported. The exam invigilator became suspicious and called police. The men admitted being offered the equivalent of more than 300 US dollars each if they scored high on the exams. The men admitted fraud and were jailed for 10 months. The magistrate at Monday morning's hearing described their actions as “shameful,” RTHK said. TOEFL exams are a standard qualification in English proficiency used as an assessment for entry to universities worldwide.
