LOS ANGELES: Not surprising, Iran's A Separation won Best Foreign Film at the 84th annual Academy Awards on Sunday in Los Angeles. It was the first Oscar awarded to a film from Iran. Directed by Asghar Farhadi, it depicts the alienation of a modern middle-class couple struggling with family burdens, divergent dreams, bureaucracy and deceptions that ensnare them. Farhadi dedicated the prize to the people of Iran. Observers had largely expected the film to take home the top prize for foreign language film, after it had swept most festivals it had been entered in. The crowd of Hollywood's top actors, actresses and moviemakers gave Farhadi a welcoming ovation. Later in the evening, The Artist, a largely silent film and in black and white, took home top billing as Best Picture.
