Denpasar, Indonesia (dpa) – Indonesia on Friday replaced the chief warden at a prison on the resort island of Bali after two nights of rioting by prisoners. The Justice Ministry removed the governor of Kerobokan prison Bowo Nariwono from his post along with its security chief, ministry spokesman Komang Arya said. He was to be replaced by Gusti Ngurah Wiratna, previously the head of Bali's second-largest prison. Prisoners went on a rampage in Kerobokan prison on Tuesday and Wednesday night, burning offices and throwing petrol bombs at security forces dispatched to the facility to quell the unrest. Three inmates were injured when police opened fire. The prison housed about 1,000 inmates, including 60 foreigners, 120 women and 13 minors. The rioting prompted the Justice Ministry to decide to transfer the foreigners, women and minors to other prisons in Bali and neighboring Java island. Police said the riot was sparked by the stabbing of a gang leader by another inmate Sunday. Followers of the gang leader retaliated by setting fire to the facility, they said. Local media have reported that prisoners complained that some inmates had been given special treatment, including time out of the prison. There were also complaints that “that regulations inside are too strict” for most inmates said Yosep Adi Prasetyo, a deputy chairman of the National Commission on Human Rights. “Family members had difficulty visiting and there's overcrowding,” he said.
