SINGAPORE: In an effort to put down a prison riot in Indonesia's island of Bali on Wednesday, police and soldiers reportedly used rubber bullets, eyewitnesses told Bikyamasr.com. One witness said that police fired into the air in order to disperse and end the prison violence on the resort island. Prisoners set fire to the Kerobokan prison at midnight local time and went on a rampage for 8 hours before security forces arrived and fired rubber bullets, Bali police chief Totoy Hermawan Indra said. “We have taken control of the situation, and no foreign inmates were harmed,” Indra said. Police were forced to climb the fence because the gates were locked from the inside by the rioting inmates. Three prisoners were seen with gunshot wounds. The prison, notorious for its overcrowding and dubbed Hotel Kerobokan by its occupants, holds 12 Australian inmates, including the convicted drug smugglers Schapelle Corby and the Bali Nine, and several other foreign nationals. Indra said the rioting followed the stabbing of a gang leader by another inmate Sunday. Followers of the gang leader retaliated by burning the facility, the police chief said.
