Ghana's National Communications Authority (NCA) has blamed telecom operators for failing to monitor SIM registration agents for the failure of the country to register millions of SIM cards ahead of the deadline in early March, which could result in the loss of service for users. Director-General of the NCA Paarock VanPercy told Adom News in an exclusive interview that the NCA “does not do SIM registration,” saying instead that operators are the ones that should be doing the work. “They hired agents to do the registration for them and the agents did a shoddy job because the operators did not monitor them,” he continued. “The operators pay their agents per how many subscribers they are able to register so the agents overlooked the legally mandated requirements and registered many people without IDs so they can get their moneys from the operators,” he said. He said the telecom operators were pre-occupied with making money from subscribers instead of ensuring that their agents were doing the right thing. The law, the NCA has repeatedly said, requires citizens to register their SIM cards using either passport, driver's license, voter ID card, National Health Insurance Card or National Identification Card. Still, as the March deadline approaches, millions of citizens have yet to register their SIM cards. BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/MaHuv Tags: Ghana, SIM, Telecom Section: Tech, West Africa
