Ghana's National Communication Authority confirmed on Monday that some 7.5 million mobile phone users in the country could face deactivation on March 3 if they do not register their SIM card as per new requirements in the country. In a statement released on Monday, the NCA confirmed that their latest data summary on the continued SIM registration revealed that over 7 million SIM cards had yet to be registered, but they were hopeful that in two weeks time, all SIM cards would be registered and services would not be cut. It added that around 1.5 million SIM cards had been submitted for registration, but the regulator is waiting for verification from a number of governmental offices, including the Passport Office, Electoral Commission, Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Authority, health services and other identification agencies to ensure the user is who he or she says they are, the NCA said. The NCA did confirm that as of January 16 the total number of data submitted for verification stood at 22,708,716, which the NCA said was 98 percent of the total number of mobile subscriptions in Ghana.
