CAIRO: At least 23 people have been killed in Madagascar as a result of tropical cyclone Giovanna has finally left the country. Another 190,000 people have also been made homeless as a result of the storm which hit the country last week, the national disaster management agency said on Sunday. Cyclone Giovanna made landfall on the eastern seaboard of the impoverished Indian Ocean Island off the east African coast on Tuesday, with wind speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour. Around 40,000 people have been provided with emergency shelter, authorities said. The United Nations has called for immediately action to assist the country in recovering from the devastating nature of the cyclone in order to ensure health conditions remain at an appropriate level to keep those struggling away from disease. The eastern district of Brickaville, some 260 kilometers from the capital Antananarivo, was particularly hard hit. Giovanna has been compared to Cyclone Geralda in 1994, which killed more than 200 people and causing widespread destruction on the island where cyclones are a regular occurrence.
