CAIRO: Egyptian state television reported on Friday that a German couple and their child were killed in an accident off the coast of the Red Sea resort town of Hurghada. According to the report, tourism police investigating the incident said a submarine they were in had collided with a coral reef, which shattered the glass barrier and filling the craft with water. The family reportedly drowned. Another 13 tourists from a number of countries, were also injured in the accident, but have been rescued. Four of those rescued have been taken to a local hospital, state television added. Submarine excursions allow tourists to see coral formations and exotic fish without having to snorkel or dive. The incident is likely to be another blow to Egypt's stumbling tourism industry, where a spate of shark attacks in early 2010 drove visitors away, and then in 2011 with the uprising that ousted President Hosni Mubarak coupled with violent clashes over the past year has seen tourism to the country dwindle dramatically.
