Johannesburg (dpa) – South African police were hunting Tuesday for a nanny who is believed to have kidnapped a six-month-old baby and was demanding the mother pay a ransom to have her child back. According to police, the nanny sent a text message to the mother's mobile phone, demanding that money be paid in return for the child. Newspaper reports said the au pair was asking for 4,500 rands (600 dollars). The mother awoke in her Pretoria home early Monday to find the child and the nanny missing. Cash and credit cards were also stolen. Police believe the kidnapping had been planned in advance, as the nanny seemed to have taken steps in recent weeks to erase her tracks, including deleting digital photos of herself that were stored on the family's computer.
