Los Angeles (dpa) – Police in Los Angeles arrested a suspect Monday in a spate of arsons in which 55 fires were set around Los Angeles since last week, the Los Angeles Times reported. Few details were available about the suspect except that he was driving a minivan with Canadian license plates and may originally have come from Germany, the report said. Most of the fires, which started Friday, were set in parked cars and some subsequently spread to garages and apartment buildings. The only casualty was a fireman who was lightly injured while suppressing one of the fires on Friday. But dozens of residents were forced to evacuate their homes because of the fires. Fire-starting materials were found in the vehicle of the suspect, the report said. Several sources were quoted as saying that the suspect is believed to be the same person captured on a surveillance video released by police on Sunday.
