CAIRO: Egypt's state media on Monday reported that more than 5,000 security personnel will be on hand to maintain security inside and outside the court where former President Hosni Mubarak's trial is scheduled to resume on Wednesday. The trial, to resume Wednesday at the Police Academy in Cairo's outskirts, will take place amid tight security measures being planned in coordination with the military and Interior Ministry. It comes after clashes in Cairo last week left at least 17 people dead and hundreds injured as the military crackdown on protests continued. At least 20 armored cars and 30 military vehicles will be used to safely transfer Mubarak and his two sons, Alaa and Gamal, to the courtroom, and will remain on guard throughout the session. Despite the tight security measures in the previous trial sessions, clashes erupted between pro and anti-Mubarak crowds outside the courtroom, leading to injuries and arrests. The trial resumes after it was halted for three months when prosecutors asked to replace the presiding judge, Ahmed Refaat. The request was rejected on December 7. Mubarak, 83, is being tried on charges of ordering the killing of around 850 people during the revolt that eventually toppled him in February. Ousted Interior Minister Habib al-Adli and 6 former security aides face the same charges. Mubarak and his two sons are also accused of corruption. All defendants pleaded not guilty when the trial started on August 3.
