CAIRO: The Muslim Brotherhood has said that the peace treaty with Israel will be reviewed, but did not go as far as saying they would end the 1979 deal with Israel. The statement by a senior leader in comments published Friday come after the group's political wing, the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) secured nearly 40 percent of the first round of voting for Egypt's new parliament. “A long time has passed since the Camp David accord was signed, and like the other agreements it needs to be reviewed, and this is in the hands of the parliament,” said Brotherhood Secretary-General Mahmoud Hussein. “The brotherhood believes the treaty is of great importance, but it is not on the top of our list. There are other priorities for the time being,” Hussein told the regional Asharq al-Awsat daily. “Generally, Israel does not honor the agreement,” he added. Hussein said that reports arguing the Brotherhood, the United States and Israel had come to a mutual understanding on “the importance of safeguarding the peace treaty with Israel” were false. Israeli government officials have shown increasing concern over the rise of the Islamists in Egypt and fear that their taking over of parliament could spell the end of nearly 35 years of peace between the two countries.
