A protest in solidarity with Egyptian protesters in Tahrir Square is to take place in London on Saturday. The march from London's Edgware Road to the Egyptian Embassy runs under the heading “Justice in Egypt” and is planned from 1-5pm. According to Mowafak Abdelghani, spokesperson of United Egyptians and Voices 4 Egypt, the organizer of the march, the planned protest “will mobilize Egyptians and non-Egyptians alike in a show of support for protesters in Tahrir Square. “Since the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) took the reins of power from Mubarak on February 11th, the hopes of the Egyptian revolution have been slowly torn apart. SCAF has gradually reneged on its promises to uphold and protect the ideals of the revolution,” Abdelghani added. The military has “repeatedly used force against peaceful protesters, used military trials to silence civilian dissent, forced virginity checks on women protesters and pushed back the date for transfer of power to an elected president, while attempting to shield itself from any future scrutiny,” he added. SCAF initially vowed to act as the guardians of Egypt's revolution, promising to see the country through a transition to civilian rule. However, after 10 months of rule, Egyptian citizens stood convinced that their military rulers intended on clinging to power, and returned to Tahrir to complete their revolution. The protests during the last week have left at least 90 people dead and over 3,000 injured. The march is also supported from the London Transport Region of the RMT: “Like millions across the globe, members of the London Transport Region RMT have been heartened and inspired by the Arab Revolutions and the Egyptian Revolution in particular,” Unjum Mirza, RMT London Region political officer said. “It is our duty to reciprocate, to offer and deliver our solidarity to those revolutionaries fighting back against the counter-revolutionary Military Regime's attempt to crush the movement and the gains won thus far,” he added. All around the world, protests are happening in solidarity with Egypt. In Sweden, Canada, Lebanon, USA and Tunesia, they have already been held during the last two days. In many cities, protests are still planned: In Amsterdam, Saturday at the Egyptian Embassy (2:00 – 5:00 pm); in Germany, Saturday in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Tübingen and Hamburg as well as in New York City, Sunday at the UN Headquarters (3:30-6:00pm). Information about the respective protests can be found on Facebook. BM
