The crown jewel of Major League Soccer may find a new home come next season. David Beckham's current contract is due to expire at the end of the year yet the 36-year-old is keen to keep on playing. David Beckham splashed into the American sports landscape in 2007 on a transfer from Spanish giants Real Madrid to the LA Galaxy. He is the most high profile player to play in the domestic American league since its inception in 1996. Since then the league has grown from ten teams to nineteen teams starting next year. Other prominent stars have made their way stateside since Beckham's transfer including Thierry Henry, Robbie Keane, and Rafael Marquez. The question now becomes whether the former Madrid and Manchester United man will want to return to the Galaxy or move on. Current French Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain look to be the Galaxy's chief competitor for his signature. They have made their interest known and appear ready to pull out all the stops in order to acquire the English international. On Friday the president of Paris Saint-Germain Nasser al-Khelaifi told lequipe.fr, “David Beckham, he goes beyond the sport. He is an ambassador, a brand, and an example to others. But he is also still a very good football player whose age is not a problem.” In May of this year an investment group called Qatari Investment Authority purchased a 70 percent share of the team for reportedly $42m-$57m. With the investment came an influx of cash for the transfer market. Over the summer the Paris club purchased Uruguay captain Diego Lugano, Argentinian starlet Javier Pastore along with French internationals Jeremy Menez and Kevin Gameiro. That summer haul was worth a reported $116 million. It is not yet clear where he will sign but Beckham has made it clear he wants to keep playing. Beckham and his Galaxy teammates are in the final of the MLS Cup to be played on November 20 and after that he has his sights set on London 2012. He hopes to represent Great Britain in the quadrennial sporting event. BM
