CAIRO: Only minutes before the first session of ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's trial, clashes between pro- and anti-Mubarak supporters erupted and 10 people were reportedly injured in front of the Police Academy in the Egyptian capital. Police intervened and arrested a number of protesters. Families of those killed during the January uprising and rights activists say the pro-Mubarak supporters started the fight by throwing rocks in their direction. Three armored vehicles and 2,000 officers are securing the academy. Cheers started after the crowd outside saw the defendants come out in the court's cage. An eye witness reported a number of people fainted among the pro-Mubarak supporters. Former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly came out first, followed by Alaa and Gamal Mubarak and finally the former president, who was lying on a bed. While Adly and his aides sat down waiting for their names to be called, Alaa and Gamal stayed standing by their father's bed, who kept looking around and exchanged few words with his sons. The session started with a pledge from the judge to those in the court to maintain self control and be quiet so the court could do its duty. Ahmed Rifaat then asked the defense teams to submit any requests in writing. The judge then proceeded to call the name of the first case, which includes Adly and 6 of his aides including Ismaeal al-Sha'r former head of Cairo Security. BM
