Malta: Animal rights activists hold symbolic protest march against circus A sizable crowd yesterday afternoon gathered at City Gate, in Valletta, for the symbolic protest march to Floriana against animal cruelty on the day the Circo Martin show opened. Stationed at the Granaries in Floriana, the animal circus will be running until 2 January. Members of the Circus Animal Rights Coalition, made up of more than 20 animal rights and welfare organizations, launched their campaign, which has become annual, over a week ago. In a statement, the coalition voiced dismay that the company which brings an animal circus over every year, JS Productions, repeatedly fails to listen to the opinion of the Maltese public, the majority of whom are against the exploitation of animals in circuses. The company continuously turns a blind eye to criticism and has no consideration for the animals which are permanently confined in awful conditions. At this very young age, current animal rights activist, Charlotte Cressey, became gravely concerned about the killing of animals for food. Today, Cressey dedicates herself to animal rights activism and community education in Fort Collins through her involvement in the Coalition for Animal Advocacy at Colorado State University. As an active member of this student organization, Cressey spends much of her time encouraging students as well as members of the community to consider the various benefits of veganism. W. Va. Firefighters Might Wear PETA Ads for Cash People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says it will donate money to the Sissonville Volunteer Fire Department – if the firefighters wear helmets with ads featuring bikini-clad women. The national group's proposed ad would depict one of PETA's “Chili Chicks” and include the message “Vegans Are Hot! Free Smokin' recipes: PETA.org,” according to a letter sent to the fire department Tuesday. The department lost its main station, three trucks and nearly all of its equipment in an electrical fire on Oct. 1. Reindeer ‘cruelty' slammed by rights group Reindeer are being tormented when slaughtered, according to the animal rights organization World Society for Protection of Animals (WSPA). WSPA released a video on Monday that shows reindeer in distress when herded and transported, and while at the slaughterhouse. “The film that we are showing is particularly shocking now that Christmas is upon us, but it clearly shows the cruel reality that reindeer are exposed to,” Roger Pettersson, secretary general of WSPA Sweden, said in a statement on Monday. The footage also shows a reindeer being killed by a knife stab to the neck, as well as animals being earmarked by knife without anesthesia.
