The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have launched a new line of peanut butter aimed at increasing awareness of animal rights and vegetarianism. It is part of the group's 30th anniversary celebration and continued media coverage of animal rights issues. According to a statement from PETA, their supporters can purchase the commemorative jars of PETA Butter through the group's website. The peanut butter itself is all-natural and boasts a PETA label. Percentages from the proceeds will go to the Pledge to be Veg program that aims to encourage website visitors to attempt a vegan diet for 30 days. “Peanut butter is the perfect food for celebrating vegan activism,” PETA said. Peanut butter was one of the first foods designed to replace meat in vegetarian diets. Scientific research has shown that peanut butter is a heart healthy food; it's rich in monounsaturated fats and protective phytochemicals. Including small amounts of peanut butter in diets has also been shown to help with weight loss. “It all makes PETA Butter the perfect way to celebrate vegetarian history, vegan outreach, and good health. The special edition jars are available online for a limited time only,” wrote Virginia Messiner in the Virginia Examiner. BM
