RABAT: On April 11, Younes Zarli, who was at his home in the Moroccan city of
Casablanca
, was asked to come downstairs by an unidentified man. Wearing casual clothes, without taking his identity card or any money, he went down to see who it was.
Younes Zarli has not been seen since. His family fears that he was taken by members of the Moroccan security forces, as he and his two brothers have been suspected of terrorism-related activities.
“It is feared that he is detained by members of the Directorate for the Surveillance of the Territory (Direction de la surveillance du territoire, DST), Morocco’s internal intelligence service, in an unofficial place of detention such as the Témara centre, in the outskirts of
Rabat
, the Moroccan capital,”
London
-based Amnesty International said.
Individuals suspected of terrorism-related activities are at risk of being tortured there.
Members of Younes Zarli’s family approached police stations in
Casablanca
; and his lawyer filed a complaint with the General Crown Prosecutor in
Rabat
. The authorities have not provided them with any information. On 27 April 2010, the Moroccan official news agency, reported that the security forces arrested 24 members of an alleged terrorist network affiliated with al-Qa’ida. His lawyer suspects that Younes Zarli is one of those arrested.
