Egypt's Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly on Sunday met with Jiangsu Fenghai New Energy Seawater Desalination Development Co., Ltd Chairwoman Qingyun Kong on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Plus (SCO+) summit in Tianjin, China. Madbouly said the government is seeking to expand cooperation with Chinese companies in desalination, noting that Jiangsu Fenghai had been recommended by President Xi Jinping during a meeting a day earlier. He stressed that Egypt has urgent needs in seawater desalination and aims to localise the manufacturing of desalination plant components. The government targets daily production of 10m cubic metres per day within the next five to six years. Jiangsu Fenghai's Chairwoman presented the company's desalination model in China, which produces 10,000 cubic metres per day and can be scaled up to meet Egypt's requirements. The system operates on renewable energy. Madbouly proposed follow-up talks between Egyptian officials and the company to explore avenues of cooperation in the sector.
