Egypt's Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) is moving to advance green energy and clean shipping agreements signed with Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power and Japan's ITOCHU. SCZONE Chairman Waleid Gamal El-Dein held talks in Yokohama with executives from both companies on the sidelines of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), the zone said in a statement Thursday. Discussions centered on activating framework agreements and memoranda of understanding signed earlier with ACWA Power for a range of renewable energy projects — including solar, wind, geothermal, waste-to-energy and desalination — as part of Egypt's broader green hydrogen strategy. The zone is working to localise the green fuel industry and build out supporting supply chains within its industrial areas. Talks also covered implementation steps for a separate agreement with ITOCHU and Orascom Construction to design, build and operate facilities to supply ships with ammonia fuel at the East Port Said and Sokhna ports. The project aims to position Egypt as a clean bunkering hub in line with global decarbonisation goals in the maritime sector. Egypt is targeting billions in green investment as it works to transition its energy mix, boost exports and attract international partners to its flagship economic zone, strategically located at the crossroads of global shipping lanes.
