Egypt's Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam held a meeting on Monday with the newly appointed ambassadors to South Sudan, Kenya and Rwanda to discuss bilateral cooperation on water resources with Nile Basin states and ways to strengthen ties. Sewilam outlined Egypt's collaborative approach, highlighting projects designed to directly benefit citizens in these countries, including solar-powered groundwater wells for drinking water, underground tanks, river moorings, aquatic weed control, flood forecasting centres, water quality facilities, technical studies for integrated water resources management, and specialist training. He also reviewed Egypt's new $100m financing mechanism to support development projects and studies in southern Nile Basin countries. Training initiatives are being delivered through the African Centre for Water and Climate Adaptation (PACWA), established under the Action on Water Adaptation and Resilience (AWARe) Initiative, to build African expertise in climate adaptation. Sewilam stressed that Egypt's support extends beyond water resources to include projects in electricity, health, education, transport, training, scholarships and mutual high-level visits, adding that Egypt is keen to boost economic cooperation and encourage Egyptian businesses to contribute to development in Nile Basin states.
