Egypt's Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi announced on Tuesday that legislative steps are underway to transform the Egyptian Mineral Resources Authority (EMRA) into an economic authority, as part of broader efforts to attract both domestic and international investment into the country's mining sector. Speaking at the opening session of the Egypt Mining Forum 2025 in Cairo, Badawi emphasised Egypt's openness to all forms of investment, highlighting plans to offer more areas for mineral exploration and prospecting nationwide. The minister revealed that the first phase of the Egypt Mining Portal — a digital gateway for the sector — is halfway through and will soon go live, streamlining investor access to geological data and licensing services. He added that the government is preparing to launch a comprehensive national survey and study to update its geological database and identify promising mineral-rich areas across the country. To support workforce development, the ministry is also establishing a specialised technical centre in partnership with the Elsewedy Foundation, focused on building human capital for the mining industry.
