UK payrolled employees fell by 33,000 in April 2025 to 30.3 million, according to provisional data from the Office for National Statistics published on Tuesday, leaving the figure down 106,000 on the year. In March, payrolled employees declined by 47,000 on the month and by 63,000 on the year. For the January to March quarter, the number fell by 53,000 on the quarter and 4,000 on the year. The UK unemployment rate rose to 4.5 per cent, while the employment rate remained stable at 75.0 per cent. Job vacancies fell for the 34th consecutive quarter, down by 42,000 to 761,000. Regular pay rose 5.6 per cent annually, or 2.6 per cent using CPI measure. The number of people claiming unemployment-related benefits rose to 1.726 million in April, while, 55,000 working days were lost to labour disputes in March.
