China raised its tariffs on US imports to 125 per cent, its Finance Ministry announced on Friday, escalating the trade war after President Trump's decision to increase US tariffs on Chinese goods to 145 per cent. The move intensifies a trade dispute that is disrupting global supply chains. The Chinese Finance Ministry called the US tariff hikes a violation of international trade norms, basic economic principles, and common sense, describing them as "completely unilateral bullying and coercion." "If the US continues to impose additional tariffs on Chinese goods exported to the U.S., China will ignore it," the ministry said in a statement. It also emphasised that China would take further countermeasures if the US continued to infringe on Chinese interests. The Chinese Commerce Ministry echoed this sentiment, stating that the US actions have no "practical economic significance" and warned that China would fight back until the US halts its tariff increases. "The US's repeated imposition of abnormally high tariffs on China has become a numbers game and has no practical economic significance," the statement read, noting that Beijing urges the US to "take a big step forward in eliminating the so-called 'reciprocal tariffs' and completely correct its wrongful practices."
