Egypt-centered Mediterranean Energy Partners (MEP) has signed on Thursday a preliminary agreement to set up a green hydrogen and ammonia production project in Suez Canal city of Ain El-Sokhna. The plant will be built over 100,000 square metres to produce 120,000 tons of green ammonia per year. The memorandum was signed by Waleid Gamal El-Dein, chairman of the General Authority of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone); Taner Sensoy, CEO of MEP; Sabah Mashali, chairperson of Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC); Mohammed El Khayat, chairman of the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA); and Abdallah El-Ebiary, head of the Investment Sector at the Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE). The deal took place in the presence of Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly, Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker, and Minister of Planning Hala al-Saeed. "We believe that green hydrogen will play a critical role in the energy transition. Egypt is uniquely positioned to provide low-cost renewable energy, access to export markets, and track record of hosting large scale projects with available talent, services, and infrastructure." MEP's Taner Sensoy said in earlier statements. "We are eager to be part of Egypt's success story in the energy transition ecosystem."
