Burundi has promised Egypt that it would not sign a separate Nile Basin agreement on the redistribution of Nile water, according to Egyptian diplomatic sources. Earlier this year, five upstream states of the Nile Basin signed on to the deal--implementation of which would reduce Egypt's and Sudan's historical shares of Nile water--in Entebbe, Uganda. “Officials in Burundi told me they would not sign the agreement,” Assistant Foreign Minister for African Affairs Mona Omar said.
