The Tagammu Party invited members of the coalition of opposition parties--the Wafd Party, the Nasserist Party and the Democratic Front Party--to a meeting on Wednesday to discuss the coalition's stance on participation in the upcoming People's Assembly elections. Sayyed Abdel Aal, secretary general for the Tagammu Party, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the purpose of the meeting is to put pressure on the regime to provide guarantees for fair elections. He added that the coalition is planning to hold conferences and stage protests to push for these demands. Refaat al-Saeed, president of the Tagammu Party, said 77 percent of his party's members are in favor of participating in the elections. Al-Saeed further added--in a message addressed to party members--that the party has already started its election campaign by printing 125,000 Ramadan calendars and 60,000 copies of its platform. Al-Saeed said the party is preparing a document on guarantees necessary for a fair election, which include judicial supervision of the entire election process, non-intervention on the part of security, suspension of the Emergency Law, and empowering the Supreme Electoral Council to ensure a transparent poll.
