Mohamed ElBaradei has said he will not run in Egypt's presidential election, scheduled for later this year. In a statement published by the independent daily Al-Tahrir on Saturday, ElBaradei said that “I have decided not to run for the post of the president of the republic.” ElBaradei, a former head of the UN nuclear watchdog, indicated however that the decision does not mean he will abandon politics, saying that he will continue to serve the nation. The Nobel laureate, who has been seen as a driving force behind the movement that forced former President Hosni Mubarak to step down, said the conditions for a fair election are not in place. His statement seemed to denounce the military's failure to put the country on the path to democracy. ElBaradei said the military rulers who took over from Mubarak have governed "as if no revolution took place and no regime has fallen."
