Amid tight security, US Attorney General Eric Holder held separate meetings on Tuesday with a number of Egyptian officials. Holder met with Egyptian Minister of Justice Mamdouh Marey, Minister of the Interior, Habib el-Adly, Attorney General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud, and Minister of State for Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Mufid Shehab. The US ambassador to Egypt, Margaret Scobey, was also present at all the meetings. Holder was expected to discuss the case of the Mercedes bribe scandal with Egypt's attorney general. Abdel Meguid delivered a statement about the meeting, noting that the talks didn't focus on a specific issue. He said Egyptian officials asked Holder for important information and legal assistance in some issues of common interest. Holder, in turn, requested information about the US community in Egypt. Holder's visit is a part of legal collaboration and exchange of information. The talks with el-Adly were reportedly concentrated on reinforcing mutual cooperation in counter-terrorism and crime. Holder expressed his appreciation for Egyptian security's efforts in combating international terrorism. Holder also told Shehab that Egypt has taken concrete steps toward political reform and protection of human rights. Translated from the Arabic Edition.
