The Administrative Court of Alexandria today overturned a government decision to deny requests by citizens to confer power-of-attorney privileges on Mohamed ElBaradei, the ex-chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency and potential candidate in Egypt's presidential elections next year. ElBaradei supporters filed a case against the Ministry of Justice and the government registration office responsible for conferring such privileges, after their attempts to grant ElBaradei and other legal scholars authority to seek constitutional amendments on their behalf were denied. "We'll confer power-of-attorney privileges according to the court's ruling," said Ahmed Iraqi Nassar, head of The Nassar Center for Law and Human Rights and member of the National Association for Change (NAC). Nassar, who initiated the case against the government's decision, referred to the court's decision as a victory for justice and freedom and the best way to welcome ElBaradei in Alexandria. Activists have postponed a demonstration, originally scheduled to take place today in front of the Administrative Court, until tommorrow when ElBaradei arrives in Alexandria. ElBaradei is traveling to Alexandria to lead a silent protest against the killing of Khaled Saeed, an Alexandrian teen allegedly torture and killed by the police earlier this month.
