Dozens of Syrians held a protest on Sunday outside the Syrian Embassy in Cairo where they criticized the regime's use of violence against peaceful protesters demanding political reform. The protesters demanded the Arab League take “a firm stance” against the Syrian regime. The protesters chanted slogans against the regime and its use of excessive force against peaceful protesters, which has led to dozens of deaths and injuries. The protesters also demanded genuine reforms that would provide political, media and personal freedoms, and called on the Syrian Ambassador in Cairo Yusuf Ahmed to follow in the footsteps of Libya's representative to the Arab League and Yemen's ambassador to Cairo by resigning and joining the protesters. The protesters marched from the Syrian Embassy in Dokki to the Headquarters of the Arab League, beside Tahrir Square in Downtown Cairo, to present a memo to the office of Secretary-General of the League Amr Moussa demanding that a strong stance be taken against the “violations and massacres committed by the Syrian regime against its people”, as was the case with Libya. Meanwhile, Bouthaina Shaaban, adviser to Syria's President Bashar al-Assad, said the protests were the result of a “foreign plot” to provoke sectarian strife. Shaaban said that various people had been charged with spying against Damascus, including an Egyptian with American citizenship and a number of Algerian, Arab and foreign nationals. In a statement to BBC on Sunday, Shaaban said that a large number of members of a cell working against Syria are now under investigation and that the cell will be exposed as soon as the investigations are concluded.
