Fearing protests could cause damage, shops and restaurants closed their doors early in the Downtown and Zamalek areas of Cairo, witnesses said. They added that lights were shut off on main streets and guests were asked to leave restaurants in preparation for closing establishments in Zamalek district. Zamalek is only a few kilometers away from Boulaq, where hundreds of protesters gathered to demand an end to the regime. Police fired tear gas canisters and detained an unconfirmed number of protesters and journalists.
