Independent MP and parliamentary candidate Mostafa Bakry on Sunday staged a sit-in before a Helwan polling station, claiming that Sunday's elections had been rigged in favor of his National Democratic Party rival, Military Production Minister Sayed Meshaal. “I found evidence of electoral fraud at stations 46 and 47, where 900 phantom votes were given to the minister,” Bakry said. He added that he would continue his protest until the director of the state-run High Elections Commission met with him to discuss his grievances. Bakry says that he also notified the commission about similar voting irregularities at two other polling stations. Clashes erupted on Sunday between Bakry's supporters and those of Meshaal during which firearms were discharged, prompting police to arrest 15 people involved.
