Parliament's Saturday session witnessed MPs throwing shoes at each other and accusing each other of treason in altercations between the National Democratic Party (NDP) and the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) deputies over Egypt's position on the war in Gaza. It all started when NDP MP Hassan Nashaat accused the opposition of working for the benefit of the enemies of Egypt, pointing his fingers to the Muslim Brotherhood MPs, who yelled back in protest. He told them: You are traitors! This prompted MB MP Ashraf Badr to take off his shoe to throw it at him, but his colleagues took the shoe to hide it from cameras. Badr was referred to the Ethics Committee.
The MB deputies then left the room and said: The traitors are those who close the Rafah crossing and export gas to Israel. They demanded that Speaker Fathi Sorour apologize for them. The altercations took place again in the meetings of the Arab Affairs, National Security and Foreign Relations Committees. MB MP Sayed Askar said: Islam comes before Egypt. And Dr. Mustafa el-Fiqi replied: No, Egypt comes first.
